Market Intelligence
Market overview dashboards, structural market signals, and Québec and Ontario coverage
Market Intelligence
Two tabs describe the market itself: Market Overview (the workspace's default tab) shows what is being bought and by whom; Market Intel digs into the structure of demand — clearances, evaluation methods, certifications, and contract patterns.
Market Overview
The overview adapts to the selected jurisdiction.
Federal panels include:
- Award volume — monthly award counts with period growth, peak/trough months, and 3-month momentum. Recent months that are still filling in due to publication lag are marked partial and excluded from the statistics.
- Top UNSPSC categories and top departments by spend
- Department × category heatmap — where spend concentrates
- Category trend heatmap — how the top categories have moved over the last 12 months
- Solicitation method breakdown and contract value distribution
- Top differentiators and industry sectors from AI-profiled contracts — clicking a sector filters the page
- UNSPSC / GSIN classification breakdown with coverage information
With the My markets scope on, the overview is replaced by panels scoped to your focus families: family-by-family market size and growth, top buyers, top competitors, and recent awards.
Québec panels draw on SEAO's bidder-level data: municipal and institutional spend, pricing spread by category, a bid-spread plot of recent awards (every bidder's price with the winner highlighted), delivery regions, contract nature, UNSPSC categories, and notice types. Region names link to profiles at /analytics/quebec-regions/<region>.
Ontario shows the municipal awards section — Toronto and Ottawa open data, Ontario municipal bids&tenders portals, and the Ontario Tenders Portal — with vendor and tender links.
Market Intel tab
The Market Intel dashboard analyzes award requirements over a selectable window (2, 3, or 5 years). Headline stats: awards analyzed, the share requiring security clearances, the share requiring certifications, and the average number of option years.
Panels:
- Security clearance demand — which clearance levels buyers ask for
- Evaluation method distribution — how bids are scored
- Top certifications required
- Indigenous set-aside trends
- Geographic hotspots — where the work is delivered
- Top technology platforms and top methodologies
- Option year patterns — how contracts are structured over time
Below the dashboard, spending cycles (federal and Québec) show seasonal purchasing rhythm, and amendment growth (federal) shows how much contracts grow after award through amendments.
Note
If the dashboard notes partial data, the analysis hit its processing ceiling and the oldest awards in the window were dropped; the stats still reflect the most recent awards.
Price benchmarks
Cothon maintains a median-based price index over federal, BC, and Québec award data. Ask the Analytics Explorer questions like "are IT prices going up?" to get price trends, trailing-12-month benchmarks, and which sectors have enough data for a reliable index.
Tip
Use Market Intel before positioning a bid: if most awards in your segment require a clearance or a certification you hold, that is a differentiator worth stating explicitly — and if you lack it, you have found the gap to close first.
