How to calculate sales tax
- 1
Choose the province or territory where the goods or services are supplied.
- 2
Enter the amount, and say whether it is before tax or tax included.
- 3
Read the breakdown: GST or HST, any provincial tax, and the total. Copy it into your quote or pricing schedule.
How the taxes stack
Ontario and the Atlantic provinces charge a single HST. Quebec charges GST plus QST, British Columbia and Saskatchewan GST plus PST, and Manitoba GST plus RST. In every case the provincial tax is calculated on the price before GST, not on the price plus GST. Alberta and the territories charge GST only.
Taxes in government bids
Most Canadian tenders ask for prices excluding applicable taxes, with GST/HST shown as a separate line, and evaluate the price before tax. Always follow the pricing schedule in the solicitation. Use the threshold checker to see which trade agreements apply at your contract value, which is also measured before taxes on federal tables.
Coming up in British Columbia
BC’s 2026 budget planned to extend PST to accounting, architectural, engineering, geoscience, non-residential real estate and security services from October 1, 2026. The province paused that expansion on September 18, 2026. Check the Government of BC PST page before pricing professional services in BC.
